Invitation
for Joining Chinese “Social Investigation” Fleet in Summer Vacation

MAY 23th, 2008

 Poem:
Follow me,
We will set out in July.
Join our vehicle fleet,
Together with your family,
for a tour of the west.
Leaving noises of cities behind,
Let us seek tranquility in our mind.

This is a wholesome long march,
A survey enhancing your understanding of China,
A rewarding experience benefiting you much more spiritually,
A journey leaving an indelible impression on you, your family and friends.

Olympic champions will go with us
on a tour of Shanxi and Gansu provinces.
Just within several days, we have cut across
An intangible hurdle between cities and the countryside,
To know China’s rural world, broaden our view,
and set up a lofty idea we’ll strive for in the life:
to let children living in poverty and falling ill have our attention and financial support,
and encourage children in well-off families to care for and help those in need.
Cities in the east contrast with the countryside in the west,
Therefore requiring a heart-to-heart exchange.
This fleet hopes everyone has the love for others, is civic-minded, and has self-confidence and self-esteem,
is contented, has sense of pride and responsibility, and the spirit of enterprise
Whether children and grown-ups, or families or organizations,
nobody can underestimate the role of this fleet.

An expert once listed those traits the middle-aged, youths and children in cities have lost:
Independence and self-confidence,
Sharing and love,
ability to stand failure and setbacks,
teamwork spirit;
lofty ideal and sense of responsibility;
experience with the nature and the world,
and experience of suffering from poverty and starvation.

The young generation and children are growing up under the loving care of parent,
living in houses built of steel bar and cement in cities.
Many thought the walnut comes from the land,
and that peanuts are produced from the trees.
Many of them, enjoying pork, have never seen pigs,
and large numbers of children, drinking milk every day, have never seen milk cows.
The live on the labor of other,
and think they will never run out of money, and foods are available forever.
They lack nothing in material acquisition,
but they have nothing spiritually.

How many children know their parents’ birthday?
How many children offer to send their regards to teachers falling ill?
How many children have the joy of helping others?
How many children know the hardships their parents experienced in the past?
How many children are ready to work hard as their parents did?
How many children plan to do something good to our country, and Chinese nation?

How to cure the commonly-seen Love Deficiency Syndrome?
How to help them out of the closed, narrow and indifferent ego-centered world?
How to help them adjust the way to observe the world, and become experienced and pragmatic?
How to help them understand the meaning of “one in his life should achieve the goals of Cultivating himself first, then Putting his family in order, then Running a country well if possible, and the last, Giving the people peace and security”?
How to encourage them to acquire direct experience with farmers, workers and the poor?
How tom guide them to understand the poverty and possession of wealth in the world, disadvantaged position and advantaged position, and the spirit of enterprise, so as to encourage them to think independently in a totally new way, and improve and adjust their plan for their life?

If one wants to achieve spectacular success, he should take the life and security of the people into account,
and keep the whole world in view.
Travelling can give you what you could not acquire from books
Only when you have lofty ideal, can you have great passion
Dear parents hoping their children have a bright future, and fatherly leaders of employers,
Letting the young generation and children know China and the rural world,
is the best wealth for them,
is to foster their greatest ability,
is to enable them to learn to keep the whole world in view,
is the best momentum to encourage them to work hard and study well,
and also the most effective method of enhancing the teamwork spirit.

Follow me,
we’ll set out in July.
Join our fleet,
together with your children,
on a tour of other parts of the vast country.
Leaving noises of cities behind,
let us seek a tranquility in mind.

Foreword

Not long ago, the Center of Public Nutrition and Development of China sent a team formed of 4 young men to Shanxi and Gansu provinces, whose task was to survey and determine the route for a large-size fleet with a mission of poverty-alleviation, coming from Beijing. When they were driving on the Northwest Plateau, witnessing the villages, farmers and their life, and enjoyed the geographical features, splendid scenes, local customs and historic sites, they were shocked. All of them grew up in cities in east China, and had produced a feeling of spiritual impact they had never experienced before. A few days later, they didn’t regard themselves as the saviors of those farmers living in poverty any more, but felt that they were making up a missed lesson concerning the life. They were actually trainees and beneficiaries. After they returned to Beijing, they all described this trip as “a must”, and “rewarding” .
Intrinsic relations, which are interdependent, exist between cities and the countryside, poverty and richness, labor and capital, and various social stratums, and form a complex human community. Whether your engage in politics, business, academic research, or join the army, only when you acquire an in-depth understanding of it and experience with it, can you adapt to the actual environment independently and achieve the success. But this is just what the young generation and spoiled children lack. Imagine what will happen when a Chinese isn’t aware of China clearly, a man living on this planet only knows half of the globe, a person only knows his social stratum, and doesn’t know his starting line of his life. Many parents can afford what their children need, and can leave them large amount of money, but they don’t feel at ease, because they understand deeply the negative effect of money to young generation. What they need really and depend upon to achieve success are social experience, perseverance, moral character, and competence. These cannot be acquired with money.
The report and feeling of the team urged us to think again: is the poverty alleviation program is a simply one-way activity, giving famers only what they want? Children in straitened circumstances need financial aids, and they are entitled to nutriments, health and happiness. Youths and children living in cities need to foster their love for those in need and the sense of responsibility, and need to be nurtured spiritually. They need to learn how to care for others. In this regard, the purpose of this fleet is not only to alleviate the poverty, but also to enrich themselves spiritually. This is actually an exchange of material nutriments and spiritual nutriments, and mirrors the interconnection of material and consciousness. Participants will benefit from this non-profit activity. We, the Center of Public Nutrition and Development and China Red Cross Foundation, launched and organized the Chinese Social Investigation Fleet in Summer Vacation, but we are not the instructors in this non-profit activity, as we need also to learn something. It is the social investigation activity itself that teaches us. The teachers may be farmers who grow melons, fruits, or pigs, or may be the Pagoda Hill, cave-houses or the Yellow River, or the County of Top Winners of College Entrance Exams, or Huangdi Mausoleum on the Northwest Plateau, or probably the difficulty or hardships we come across during the journey.
According to our plan, the Chinese Social Investigation activity will start from this. Each activity varies in terms of the route, theme and way of activity. But the purposes are same: to let all the youths and children enjoy sufficient foods and nutriments, and acquire a healthy body, and let all the youths and children live in a world of love and devleop spiritually in a healthy way.
Let us go together, and we well set out in July.
