What PNDC does?

1. Policy-oriented research and consultation on nutrition-related economic, social and health issues

- The relationship between nutrition and population quality and socio-economic development;
- Input-output and cost-effectiveness analysis and evaluation;
- Strategies, policies and plans for nutrition intervention programs;
- Strategies, policies and plans for the development of nutrition industry.

2. Advocacy and preparation for a National Working Committee on Nutrition

The National Working Committee on Nutrition, a national level government organ composed of representatives from all relevant departments and sectors, is to provide leadership and institutional capacity to the improvement of public nutrition in China. PNDC will advocate for and assist in the establishment of the Committee at an early date.

3. Coordination of the UNICEF nutrition improvement program

PNDC serves as one of the two designated in-China coordination agencies of the UNICEF nutrition improvement program, an important component of its technical assistance to China.

4. Executive agency of the National Public Nutrition Improvement Program

The National Public Nutrition Improvement Program is an international cooperation program approved by the State Council and jointly sponsored by NDRC, the Ministry of Health and other relevant departments. PNDC serves as the Program¡¯s executive agency, and Prof. Yu Xiaodong as the program office director.

5. Communication between government, industry, consumers and R&D institutions

It is widely believed that the success of nutrition improvement programs hinges on the concerted efforts of government, industry, consumers and R&D institutions. PNDC aims to bridge gaps, promote mutual understanding, and facilitate consensus and cooperation through communication, consultation and dialogue.

6. Social mobilization and on-line communication

In corporation with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and assistance from international organizations, the Websites ¡°Public Nutrition in China¡± and ¡°Chinese Alliance for Public Nutrition¡± will be launched in both Chinese and English to provide the public with all public nutrition related information, including policy, legislation and regulation, education, training, research, consultation, world trends, nutrition products and marketing.

7. Promotion of the development of nutrition industry in China

PNDC is committed to assisting the development of China¡¯s nutrition industry to achieve targets such as expansion, internationalization, technological upgrading and global competitiveness. PNDC will publish a ¡°China Yearbook on Nutrition Industry¡± regularly as a resource book of the development of nutrition industry in China and worldwide.

8. Other works entrusted by the government, international organizations and other social institutions
